Pair of Hand-Carved French Louis XVI Beds by J. B. Boulard Original Paint, 1700s
Hand carved with stylized acorn finials, and with a shaped and fluted frame, they have upholstered fronts and backs of both headboards and foot boards and all are in its original beautiful paint. Signed with the maker's stamp on the rails as seen in the photo. Each bed measures approximately 46 1/2" H x 38 1/2" W x 78 1/2 L and come with two headboards, two foot boards and four side rails. These beds have been shown in Paris to the leading expert Laurent Condamy who wrote the reference book Jean-Baptiste Boulard, Menuisier du Roi. Condamy acknowledged they are genuine Boulard beds with their original paint and added that he has never before seen a pair of J. Boulard built up a distinguished reputation in Paris as an outstanding ebeniste which in 1777 earned him an appointment as fournisseur-ordinaire du Mobilier de la Couronne (exclusive furniture craftsman for King Louis XVI's estates). He continued to create furniture for the Garde-Meuble, used in many of the Royal palaces until his death in 1789. Examples of Boulard's work can be found in the Musee du Louvre, Musee des Arts Decoratifs, The Carnavalet in Paris, The Wallace Collection in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and The Chateau de Chantilly.
