Antique LOUIS XVI French King Portrait Minitaure Signed DURAN Royal Enamel Frame. Colours may differ due to any flash used. It is a portrait miniature of the French King Louis XVI...
He was born in 1754 and died in 1793. This portrait could well have been in the home of a French Royalist or even a member of the French Royal family... Due to the fact it has the. At the top and the Kings name. At the bottom on the frame in the gilt hand painted enamel design...
As well around the name.... Look now at the white enamel background and see the fine later added FLOWERS in gilt.... Then if you look at the green enamel too you also see added gilt FLOWERS as well... The edges of the enamel are slightly curved too... So its not flat as such.
You will also see in the beautiful white and green enamel it has pictures of the crossed. Tied with bows at both sides.. As well as the usual foliage designs and swirls of something as grand as this.... The main highlight detail is picked out in gold paint.. These are bright raised red enamel.. This has glass which is slightly domed over the portrait miniature. The portrait miniature is very fine and the attention to detail is just fabulous... He is wearing a typical Kings attire with the pale blue cross over sash and his Royal medals upon it... Is hung on a pale blue ribbon too...This is usually seen on a red ribbon..... A column can be seen to the rear at the right hand side and a red curtain swag to the left hand side.... On the column base just above his shoulder there is a signature.. You will see it has the usual bright gold and red fabric material on the back.. The edges have the usual flaps which are turned over to keep it all in place...
And you will also see a WAX SEAL at the top right hand corner... This is cracked and has initials JA or JN above it... The seal has an open winged spread EAGLE picture upon it....
With wording around as well.. But I cannot see what it says.... Usually you find this sort of OFFICIAL seal on certain objects like Holy Relics or similar.... As well as that it has a single suspension loop at the top to hang it on a wall etc.
The glass is a little loose within the frame. I have been into the back just to see whats what... And taken a photo of the back of the painting. I would say this is a later portrait miniature AFTER someone else.
The frame I think is more like 19th Century and not the period of King Louis XVI 1754-93..... I think its been done later... I may well be WRONG of course... If you google him you will see many portraits signed by him.. So he was a prolific artist of his time.
The frame is 5 and 3/4 inch wide x 9 inch tall x 1/2 inch deep... The oval portrait is approx 3 and a 1/4 inch x 4 and 1/2 inch.
A really nice quality French antique portrait miniature in a period frame... And worthy of being in any good antique collection.... Please see close up pictures for more detail.
