This oval is likely remnant from a panel original in use as back to a chair, but has been cut to an oval, likely framed for centuries. The school was in Saint Cyr.
This embroidery is from the Marchioness or her students. This one with the rare imagination of a leopard. I should give you one more tidbit of the story: Following the disgrace of the Marquise deMontespan in a poisoning scandal and the death of Queen Maria Theresa of Austria, she married the king in secret in 1683. Madame de Maintenon held a great influence over Louis XIV, who visited her every day in her apartments overlooking the palace's royal courtyard. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I've include section photos for your inspection, and you'll not very slight loss to yarn in a stitch or two, very little need for restoration. While this begs to be focus of a lush down-filled accent pillow, it has a heavy linen canvas backing which I do not think flexible enough for that use without it being removed. I've shown in one image, the panel set into an antique oval frame, just to hint at that as a fine possible way to use and display this very rare 17th century needlework. Colors remain brilliant, exotic figures and the addition of the pet small dragon make it exceptionally charming. We're easy to deal with. Our fine inventory is very important.
