French Louis XVI Ormolu Clock. For sale is a superb Louis XVI style ormolu (gilt bronze) Clock, from the mid 19th century Napoleon III Era. Clocks of this quality were made using traditional techniques during the reign of Napoleon III as a revival of the important styles of the previous century.
The gilding appears original, the sculpting and modelling of the case is of the highest quality, with festive cherubim on top, holding grapes and a triangle. A pair of goat heads and classical scrollwork and other decoration decorate the rest of the case. The original white enamel dial, with Roman numerals and speed adjustment screw, (there is a tiny crack at 4 o'clock at the winding hole) is accompanied by pierced gold hands. Sits on five turned feet. Exceptional condition, I believe it has been previously kept under a glass dome, which has kept the gilding looking fresh for the last 160 years.
It has a light, sweet-sounding bell, that strikes on the hour, and once on the half hour. Movement is unsigned that I can see, but possible Japy Freres. This clock was recently dismantled, serviced and restored by an expert horologist in France where it was sourced: This involved the complete dismantling (about 20 pieces) Revised Movement (disassembled, cleaned, polished pivot, capping, assembly, control) Now keeps excellent time. Height: 35 cm; Width: 30 cm; Depth: 16 cm. It can be sent very securely double packaging, bubble wrap.
