WEAR CONSISTENT WITH AGE AND USE. He was born in Tours in 1686, and by the age of 13, had already made his first clock. In 1699, he moved to Paris for further training.

He became maître horloger in 1713 and later juré of his guild. Further appointments followed, including the Directorship of the Société des Arts , but the pinnacle of his achievement was being appointed clockmaker (Horloger Ordinaire du Roi) to King Louis XV in 1739. He carried on his business from premises in the Rue du Harlay until his death in 1759.

His son Pierre Le Roy (17171785), a brilliant clock-maker in his own right, carried on the business until the early 1780s. Another son, Julien-David Le Roy (17241803), was a Neo-classical architect and archaeologist, author of the Ruins of the Most Beautiful Monuments of Greece. His third son, C harles was a physician and Encyclopédiste , and his fourth, Jean-Baptiste Le Roy , a physicist and Enclyclopédiste as well.

Examples of his work can be found in many major museums around the world, including the Louvre in Paris, and the Victoria and Albert. To his contemporaries, Julien Le Roy was. The most skillful clockmaker in France, possibly in Europe.

He belonged to the fifth generation of a family of clockmakers; with his brothers, he formed one of the most important clock and watch workshops in the 1700s. Le Roy's reputation was based on his mechanical discoveries, including a special repeating mechanism that improved the precision of watches and clocks. The two repeating watches he produced for. Were the first to have been made with a feature that allowed His Majesty to remove the clock-face in order to see the clockworks revealed. Le Roy's findings revolutionized the Parisian trade, contributing not only to the renewal of clock production but also to a healthy scientific rivalry as researchers sought new methods to more accurately measure time. Le Roy's workshop also produced a large number of ordinary clocks and watches to satisfy wide public demand. During his life he is known to have made or supervised over 3,500 watches, amounting to an average of one hundred movements a year, or one every three days.

In contrast, other workshops only produced between thirty and fifty pieces per year. Le Roy's extensive clientele included many members of Europe's noble and royal families.
