Rare and collectible French antique Provencal early 20th century salt box or Saliero - Salt would be stored in chunks/blocks in the top box and the lower drawer used to store the ground salt. These boxes would usually be hung on the wall or standing near to the fire - to keep the salt dry. They were used every day and the proximity they were kept to heat made them vulnerable to damage. These boxes were hand crafted by artisans - and this one is signed on the reverse A Ceard- Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Finest craftsmen of France). It has shell feet and fine sculpture on high quality wood- Rabbit & Game - decorative detail on the top backplate, front panel and lower skirt.
The lid is hinged and lifts and the drawer at the base opens with a metal pull. Condition - Excellent antique condition- Light surface marks - but truly nothing of any consequence - On the reverse - it has been caught lightly where it has been slid on to the wall fixing but again nothing of any note.
Height highest point 15.75/40cms. It has a slot to hang discreetly on the wall on the reverse - alternatively it will stand on a worktop, dresser etc. Perfect for your Provencal Kitchen.
