Antique 1880 Louis XV Grotesque French Lion Devil Gargoyle Bronze Door Knocker

  

Extremely rare & superb french bronze door knocker t. His door knocker belonged to a colonial argentinian house made during 1880 and all bronze door parts of this house has been imported from France.

Hree numbered parts (each part is numbered: 3, 3 and 33 - typical numeration from the end of XIX century). If you see this piece at the first time, you will conclude it is a lion head. However, if you pay more attention, you will see lion front are some kind of feather as a bird, or leaves, and eyes expression seem to be from a devil, demon o crazy men, but not from an animal.

Head has round big sides with some kind of two more eyes, so face seems to have four eyes as an optical illusion. And finally, lion´s mane on down seem to be a beard (usually used by devils or satyrs, but not for animals). That is why i conclude this amazing piece is a combination of creatures with devil looking, so can be considered as a gargoyle. With no doubt, this is the most grotesque french gargoyle head door knocker i have seen and probably the rarest style you can find if you look for all internet (grotesque style with Louis XV accents).

Made in France during 1880 (not a modern or vintage reproduction). All parts are original, only screws has been made and two of them has been handmade expressally for this piece and exactly as originals (finished as eyes). Impressive carved & detailed piece with magnificent looking. All defects not mentioned but visible in the pictures will be considered as described.
