French Louis XVI Gilt Bronze FAUN/SATYR Inkstand Desk Inkwell. Tunning antique and high quality French Louis XVI style gilded bronze inkstand/desk inkwell with base, depicting a Faun/Satyr on top of lid.

Highly detailed piece made of gilded hollow bronze Lost Wax technique. Mounted on a griotte color molded base with green felt on bottom. Tripod lidded urn/vase is topped with a beautiful and very well sculpted sitting Faun or Satyr figure hiding and apple with his left hand and holding a pen rest with right hand. Base of lid is decorated with three high reliefs man faces and crabs to the end of beards, all of them jointed with garlands. This unique inkwell shows an elaborated ormolu type work all over, it stands on three winged sphinxes ended in one clawed feet each, jointed with fancy garlands including three Greek style human masks.

The urn contains a small cobalt blue glass vase that fits through a matching gilded bronze open interior flange lid incised with four concentric circles. Unmarked or signed, but known to be made in France, circa 1880.

Note: Dip Pen on first picture is not included in this sale!! Overall: 9 height x 4-½ diameter (23 x 11.5 cm). Weight: 3.50 Pounds (1, 57 Kg). Faun Figure: 2-¾ height (7 cm).

Base diameter: 4-½ (12.50 cm). Glass vase: 1-¾ height x 1-½ diameter (4.5 x 4 cm). Minor markings and scratches (not noticeable) here and there. Not original pen rest piece easy to remove and replace. Somewhat worn marble base and green felt on bottom evident signs of pass of time, please see pictures.

Chip to the marble base. Tiny hairline to front of one leg please see picture #. Hinge and underneath cover of lid missing please see picture.
